First Reported Cases of Rabies West of Appalachian Mountains

Health officials in Kentucky are keeping a close eye on two recent reports of rabies in Virginia raccoons. Researchers with the University of Kentucky Extension in Bell County say this is the first time there have been cases of rabies reported on the west side of the Appalachian Mountains. Wildlife agencies in Virginia dropped bait containing rabies vaccines in the areas where the two rabid raccoons were found.
