Letcher County School District Facing Federal Budget Cuts

As the Letcher County School Board grapples with a possible bus driver strike over a potential pay raise, the district is one of many in the state reeling from federal budget
cuts.

The Mountain Eagle reports the recently passed federal budget canceled $96 million for Kentucky Schools, including about half a million for Letcher and Jenkins.

The Assistant Superintendent of Letcher County Public Schools told the paper that money
was for Student Support and Academic Excellence and Rural Educational Achievement.

As for the bus drivers, at their meeting last month the Board of Education said they had
to see if there is now enough money for raises and will decide at their next meeting.
