Decisions Delayed in Status Hearing for Former Sheriff Mickey Stines

It will be at least two more weeks until we know whether former Letcher County Sheriff
Mickey Stines will be allowed out on bond to await trial for charges related to the
murder of District Court Judge Kevin Mullins in September 2024.

Stines, who has been in jail in Leslie County on no bond since the shooting, was in Letcher County Friday for a status hearing.

His defense team says Stines is not a danger to anyone and is not a flight risk and they have asked for a $50,000 bond.

The Commonwealth’s Attorney says according to the Supreme Court if you are charged with a capital offense, you are not entitled to bail.

The judge said he would rule in two weeks.

Stines’ attorney also wants the Grand Jury indictment against him tossed out, alleging some improper procedures.
