City of Hazard Restaurant Tax Money Being Appealed

Money collected this year for the City of Hazard’s restaurant tax reportedly remains in
limbo while the legality of the tax plays out in the courts.

The city enacted the 3% tax as a way to raise money to boost tourism, as is the purpose of the tax which many other cities use for tourism upgrades.

However, those opposed to the tax say the city was not eligible to enact the tax and a series of judgments and appeals since then have had the tax on a seesaw.

WYMT reports the issue could be headed to the state Supreme Court.

Meanwhile the money collected since January has been held in an escrow account.
