Judge Will Remain on Case in Trial of Former Sheriff Mickey Stines

The judge presiding over the murder trial of former Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines is staying put on the case.

Stines is accused of shooting and killing Judge Kevin Mullins at the courthouse in September 2024.

His defense had filed a motion for the Special Judge in the case, Christopher Cohron, to recuse himself for potential bias after they produced video of Cohron and Mullins sitting near each other at a judicial conference about a week before Mullins died.

But in a lengthy response Cohron denied the recusal, saying he barely knew Mullins other than as a nominally professional colleague.
