Letcher County native Hoover Darrel Niece has passed away.
He was the football coach at Estill County High School for 27 years.
The Estill County football field is now named after him.
He was also a member of the Dawahares, KHSAA Hall of Fame.
Niece was a star in football and basketball at Whitesburg High School making all-state in both his junior and senior years in both football and basketball.
Also Larry French, a legendary Kentucky high school football coach, passed away on Thursday after a 47-year coaching career.
He had a record of 381-182, making him the third winningest coach in Kentucky high school football history.
During his career, French coached six different high schools, including Mercer County, Meade County, Lincoln County, Boyle County, Southwestern, and Middlesboro.
He won two state titles at Boyle County in 2009 and 2010.
