Pikeville Fire Department Honored For Work in Deadly Martin County Building Collapse

Members of the Pikeville Fire Department have been honored by the Pikeville City Commission for their response to a building that collapsed last month in Martin County, trapping two people inside. The coal prep plant was being dismantled when it suddenly collapsed on October 31, burying two Pike County men who had been working on the project. The Pikeville crew responded immediately when the call came for mutual aid and were the first on the scene and began clearing a path to the first victim. Officials say Pikeville Fire is one of just three departments in the eastern region that are trained in building collapse. Despite the heroic efforts of the firefighters, the two trapped men Alvin Nees and Billy Ray “Bo” Daniels, both passed away.
