Contained Sunday Fire at Old Vocational School Caused by Outside Wiring

The Sunday fire at the former Letcher County Area Vocational and Technical School was apparently caused by a short circuit of some power wires. Whitesburg Fire Chief Charles β€œRed” Colwell tells the Mountain Eagle the protective covering on the wires was worn off from years of friction mostly caused by wind. He says the short circuit did trip a breaker and cut off the power so firefighters were able to get it out pretty quickly with just some damage to the roof. No one was hurt. The building is used for the Alternative Education Center, practice spaces for several teams, and some storage.
