Superintendent Responds To Questions About SUV Purchase

Letcher County’s Schools Superintendent is responding to concerns over the school’s purchase of a Suburban for student transportation.

In a statement Denise Yonts says they needed an economical and safe option for transporting small groups that travel for competitive events and with diesel vehicles recommended over gas when transporting students for safety the options were limited.

She says state law prohibits 15-passenger vans for students and insurance won’t cover 12-passenger vans because they are prone to rollovers so the 9-passenger options were what remained.

She says they were able to get it at the state price list of $67,000 which is half the cost of a small bus.
