After more than two years, the Buckhorn School is back open.
The building suffered massive damage in the July 2022 flood and since then students have been going to the old A.B. Combs Elementary which for some kids added more than an hour each way.
The start of school was delayed 10 days this year while repairs and upgrades were finished but they still have just some temporary windows and doors installed as they still need to put in new permanent ones that are flood-proof as required by the project’s FEMA funding.
Principal Jennifer Hickerson tells WYMT they had a first day attendance of 325 students, which is more than last year and she expects that number to increase.
