Governor Beshears Asks For Resignation of Sheriff Mickey Stines

Governor Andy Beshear has asked for the resignation of Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines following his arrest last week for the shooting death of District Judge Kevin Mullins.

Stines was arraigned Wednesday and pleaded not guilty to first degree murder.

He is being held in the Leslie County Detention Center with another hearing set for October 1 to be held in Morgan County.

According to the Lexington Herald Leader, the Governor sent a letter to Stines on Wednesday asking him to step down by today and reportedly said if he did not step down, Beshear would start the process of removing him.

State law allows for a governor to remove a peace officer for neglect of duty.
