Plans Underway to Turn Former Perry County School into Culinary Training Facility

Plans are reportedly underway to convert the former Leatherwood School in Perry County into a culinary training facility and commercial kitchen.

Officials say they would use money from the state’s opioid settlement because it would work to help those in recovery by teaching them new skills.

Perry County Judge-Executive Scott Alexander tells the Hazard Herald they want to train people for jobs as chefs as well as hospitality such as waiting tables and running kitchen facilities.

He says that not only helps those in recovery to make a new life but will also provide a new workforce for local businesses.

And Alexander says another benefit is the location of the Leatherwood School near the
off-road park so once it’s working as a restaurant facility, it could also help tourism.
