Art Program Helping Buckhorn School Flood Victims Heal

Students from Buckhorn School whose lives were upended by the July 2022 flood are expressing themselves through art and performance thanks to two arts organizations.

The Arts Station and Shooting Stars Youth Theater are running a program offering students a way to creatively express their feelings and work toward healing.

It’s made possible through a grant from the Rural Urban Exchange program.

The Hazard Herald reports the team has been at Buckhorn School with third, eighth and 11th-grade classrooms doing creative writing projects that allow students a way to recount their
experiences of the flood.

Tim Deaton of the Appalachian Arts Alliance says there is a high value in arts-based self-expression to deal with trauma.
