A major change for Harlan ARH as they’ve announced they will stop delivering babies at
the end of the month.
The CEO says it’s because demand for their services has fallen off making it no longer cost effective.
In a statement Wednesday the CEO said while Whitesburg ARH delivers about 540 babies a year, Harlan ARH delivers about 58.
And he says Whitesburg is currently delivering 35% of the babies with a Harlan County zip
code.
Officials tell WYMT that Harlan will still handle obstetric emergencies and if necessary, the ER will deliver babies, but they will try to transfer patients if there’s time.
