A blown transformer may be the cause of a brush fire in Pike County Wednesday.
The Pikeville Fire Department was called out around 3pm to the fire behind the Northgate
community on Town Mountain Road.
It was already a high fire danger day with dry air and gusty winds and the fire grew quickly behind the apartment buildings which had to be evacuated.
Pikeville’s Fire Chief tells WYMT the Division of Forestry estimates about 60 to 70 acres total burned on both sides of the ridges.
Firefighters from Hurricane, Coal Run Village, UMG, RH Group, Pike County, the Division of Forestry and Northgate all helped Pikeville to contain the fire.
No one was hurt.
The transformer is the likely cause.
