Kentucky’s Attorney General is asking the state Court of Appeals to keep more than 240 convicted felons behind bars including two from Letcher County and three from Floyd.
Russell Coleman is challenging a section of the Safer Kentucky Act, which was passed by the General Assembly two years ago but struck down by a Franklin Circuit judge last month. It broadened the number of offenses that would classify someone as a violent offender and require them to serve at least 85 percent of their sentences.
The recent Circuit ruling would allow them out after just 20 percent of their sentences.
