The Cowan Community Center is expanding and taking over the historic Whitesburg Post Office which they have used off and on over the years along with other organizations.
The Mountain Eagle reports the building is being donated to the Center by the Louisville businessman and philanthropist who bought it eight years ago – Brook Smith who along with his wife founded the Appalachian Impact Fund.
The building dates to 1937, built as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal program.
