Embankment Repairs Scheduled on KY 1862 (Thornton Road) in Letcher County

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (July 10, 2025) The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet advises motorists that embankment stabilization work using polybag retention systems is scheduled on KY 1862 (Thornton Road) at two separate locations in the Thornton area of Letcher County.

Crews will begin work at Site 1 on Monday, July 14, near mile point 3.761, approximately 7/10 of a mile past the bridge to Thornton. This phase is expected to be completed by Thursday, July 17, weather permitting.

Site 2 is located at mile point 7.029, approximately 3.9 miles beyond the bridge. Repairs at this location will begin Monday, July 28, and continue through Tuesday, August 5, also weather permitting.

Work will take place daily from 8:00 a.m. to approximately 6:00 p.m. Equipment and concrete trucks will block the narrow lane during most of the construction. Flaggers and traffic barriers will be in place to assist with traffic control.

Due to limited space and safety considerations, motorists will need to detour using KY 931 to KY 15 during working hours.

KYTC District 12 appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as we perform these critical repairs to stabilize embankments and ensure roadway safety.
