Former Buchanan County Female Deputy From Pike County Passes Away

A Pike County native who blazed a trail for women in law enforcement has passed away. Ruth Hutchinson was the first woman to serve as a deputy for the Buchanan County Virginia Sheriff’s Office. She passed away Sunday at the age of 89. WYMT reports she was very active working in the Grundy area as a deputy and EMT for Grundy Ambulance Service and Grundy Hospital. Her funeral is this Sunday, December 3 at the Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel of Grundy
