Former Sheriff Mickey Stines Attorney’s Plan to Present Insanity Defense

Attorneys for former Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines are reportedly preparing to present a defense of insanity in his murder case for the shooting death of Letcher County District Judge Kevin Mullins at the Letcher County Courthouse last September.

Stines is being held in an out of county jail awaiting trial in the case in which investigators allege he shot Mullins multiple times at close range while the two were talking in the Judge’s chambers shortly after returning from lunch together.

At a Grand Jury hearing last November, Stines’ attorney said the shooting was a moment of
“extreme emotional disturbance” and was not premeditated.

WYMT reports that in a filing yesterday, Stines’ attorney said he intends to present a defense of insanity.
