Hazard Working to Repeal Restaurant Tax

The Hazard City Commission is working towards repealing its 3 percent restaurant tax.

A first reading of an ordinance to repeal it happened last week and the second reading and vote are set for December 15.

The Hazard Herald reports that while the city approved the tax in 2024 to raise money for the Tourism Commission it apparently went against state legislation based on Hazard’s classification.

A trip through the Appeals Court system ended with the need to repeal it.

It has reportedly never been collected.
