Job Corp Center in Prestonsburg Staying Open For Now

There’s been a temporary reprieve in the U.S. Department of Labor’s closure of the Job
Corps center in Prestonsburg.

Job Corps offers vocational training to help give those who have not finished high school a chance to learn a skill to enter the workforce such as construction, nursing or plumbing.

Last week the DOL announced the closure of nearly 100 contractor-operated Job Corps sites around the country, citing a report showing only a 38% graduate rate but with more than $100,000 spent on each student.

On Wednesday a judge granted a temporary restraining order against the shutdowns saying it would need Congressional authorization.

A hearing has been set for June 17 for the DOL to make their case for the shutdown.

If the restraining order ends up being rescinded, the Prestonsburg Job Corps center would close at the end of June.
