Local Groups Working to Alleviate Food Need Due to Government Shutdown

Several groups, agencies and citizens are stepping up to help with the pending suspension of SNAP benefits starting tomorrow if the federal government shutdown does not end tonight.

As we reported yesterday there is a Letcher-County-Wide food drive underway to stock up the Pantry.

If you go to our Facebook Page at 1039 The Bulldog WXKQ you can see a list of the items needed and the many places where you can drop them off to be collected for the Food Pantry.

Collections will start tomorrow and run through at least next week and there are many times and locations to choose from.

If you need food assistance you can register to receive food from the Letcher County
Food Pantry which is open every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 10am-1pm.

They also occasionally have drive-thru events.

To register you just have to show your driver’s license or state-issued ID, and tell them your household size, with names and birthdays of everyone in your home as well as your estimated income amount.

The Isom IGA has formed a partnership with Blackey Missionary Baptist Church on a
community food drive to address the expected food shortage.

They have put together two grocery bag options which you can buy to help someone: a $5 bag and a $10 bag.

The bags purchased in-store will then be available for pickup on Wednesday afternoon
November 5 at the Blackey Missionary Baptist Church from 2:30pm-4:00pm.
