Local Officials Announce Major Step Forward in Development of Letcher County Airport

After 21 years of working and waiting, there’s been a major step forward in building an
airport in Letcher County.

The Letcher County Airport Board says they have officially signed a grant agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration to pay for designing an airfield in Isom.

The agreement provides about $2.4 million to cover the design phase of the project, a significant milestone for the project that was started in 2004.

Once the design is done, then the county will pursue money for the construction.

Officials say the airfield checks several boxes toward the long-term growth of the county
as it will support local businesses and industry as well as tourism and recreation.
