New Pool Named in Honor of Teen Killed in Accident

A new swimming pool is now open at the Breaks Interstate Park and the concessions area has been named in honor of an Elkhorn City teen who worked there and passed away a few days before the pool opened.

The Appalachian News Express reports the pool was funded thanks to help from the Dickenson County Industrial Development and Economic Authority, the Abandoned Mine Lands AMBLER program, the Virginia Department of Energy and others.

The concessions area is named for 17-year-old Zena Newsome who worked at the water park complex and was killed in a traffic accident just before Memorial Day.

A plaque was presented in Zena’s honor to her family.
