Work is underway on a new Floyd County Animal Shelter.
Officials broke ground last week on the new facility, the first since the current one was built in the late 1970s.
WYMT reports its infrastructure has been worsened by being in the flow of repeated
floods and it is too small for the growing need of stray and abandoned animals, so it is
hard to keep it clean and keep the animals healthy.
The new shelter will have twice the capacity and better ventilation and safety features.
So far they have raised more than $400,000 through grassroots fundraising, but they need another $500,000.
