Owsley County and North Laurel Lose in Opening Round of Girls Sweet 16

The girls sweet 16 state tournament got underway Wednesday.

14th Region champion the Owsley County Lady Owls made their first ever appearance in the state tournament and led by as many as 15 over Bowling Green but couldn’t hang on and lost a heartbreaking game to the Purples out of Region 4.  The final was Bowling Green 45 and Owsley County 43z

13th Region winner the North Laurel Lady Jaquars took on Franklin County out of Region 11 in the final of 4 games Wednesday.  The North Laurel girls lost 51-30. 

In the other 2 girls sweet 16 games on Wednesday:

McCracken County beat Russell 50-33 

and Butler got by Anderson County 58-49. 

15th Region winner, the Pikeville Lady Panthers are making their 5th appearance in 6 years at the state tournament.

They will play in the first game of today’s 4 other opening round games

At 11:00am this morning, Pikeville will face 5th Region champion Bethlehem.

Also today at 1:30pm, Owensboro faces Henderson County, at 6:00pm

tonight it will be George Roger’s Clark against tournament favorite Sacred Heart and to wrap up the opening round tonight at 8:30pm, Cooper will face Danville Christian.

The girls sweet 16 quarterfinals will be Friday, the semifinals on Saturday morning and the championship game Saturday night at 7:00pm, all at Rupp Arena.
