The Perry County Department of Outdoor Recreation is issuing a safety reminder about kayaking near low-head dams following the death of a man on the North Fork River.
Kevin Sellers died June 7 after he and his daughter were swept into the undertow while crossing a low-head dam near the Woodland Park bridge.
His daughter was rescued by first responders and treated at a local hospital.
The Director of Waterways for Perry County Outdoor Recreation tells the Hazard Herald that low-head dams are no match for even the strongest kayakers and swimmers and when you encounter one, get out and portage around it.
They say the dams appear harmless on the surface, but it is deceptive because you cannot see the cyclone of water churning below the surface
