Just as Letcher County Schools did this year, Perry County Schools reportedly plan to create their own police department and eventually not rely on the Perry County Sheriff’s Office.
The Chief Financial Officer for Perry County Schools tells WYMT while the start-up costs will be higher with vehicles, equipment, and training, the district will save money over time in comparison with contracting with the Sheriff’s Office.
But he says the main benefit will be consistent police presence and connections with the students.
They hope to have it ready to operate by August 2026.
