Prosecutors are officially asking to move the murder trial of former Letcher County
Sheriff Mickey Stines out of the county.
Stines is accused of shooting and killing District Judge Kevin Mullins in the Letcher County Courthouse last September.
Stines has been jailed in Leslie County since his arrest.
This week the Commonwealth’s Attorney filed a motion to move the case saying neither the defense nor the prosecution could have a fair trial in Letcher County, since both Stines and Mullins had been elected here.
They also cite the extensive pretrial publicity.
The defense will be allowed to respond to the request. There is no indication yet on how long it will take the judge to rule on it.
