Sheriff Mickey Stines Enters Not Guilty Plea

Letcher County Sheriff Mickey Stines has pleaded not guilty to murder in the shooting death of Letcher County District Judge Kevin Mullins last week in the judge’s chambers at the Courthouse.

Stines was arraigned Wednesday, appearing via Zoom from the Leslie County Detention Center where he is being held.

A preliminary hearing in the case has been set for October 1 in Morgan County.

Stines was temporarily appointed a public defender for that hearing.

The special prosecutor, 27th Judicial Circuit to Stines getting a public defender since his annual salary means he is not “indigent” but an attorney from the state Department of Public Advocacy who appeared with Stines says he is expected to lose his job and his family does not have the resources “for this eventuality.”

There was no discussion of any bond for Stines at the arraignment.
