Work Is Underway at Two Local Football Fields

Crews have started work to fix the damage from the July 2022 flood at the old West Whitesburg football field.

Schools Superintendent Denise Yonts tells the Mountain Eagle tons of dirt have been brought in to raise certain areas above the floodplain and the field is being reconfigured with the home side next to Parks Street and the visitors’ side will be next to the river.

The $2.2 million project is being paid for by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

There is also work happening at the Letcher County Central High School football field where they are putting in a new scoreboard and JumboTron.

It will cost $300,000 but the Superintendent tells the paper the district will sell ads on it.
