Letcher County Remains in Severe to Extreme Drought Despite Recent Rain

LETCHER COUNTY, Ky. (WXKQ) – Despite the rain, Letcher County remains in severe or extreme drought.

The federal drought map places the eastern part of Letcher County in the D2, or Severe Drought, category, while the rest of the county is now listed in D3, or Extreme Drought conditions.

While locally heavy rainfall will provide temporary relief, drought experts note that it typically takes several widespread rain events over an extended period to significantly improve severe drought conditions.

Severe Drought conditions dominate most of southeastern Kentucky, with Extreme Drought conditions covering all of Knott and Perry County, along with portions of Leslie and Harlan Counties.
